In 2015 alone, nearly 5,000 motorcycle riders and their passengers died in crashes, according to the National Safety Council. In addition to fatalities, motorcycle accidents were responsible for injuring an additional 88,000 people. This was an increase of nearly 3% from 2006.
To combat this alarming trend and to help raise awareness, May has been designated as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
What Drivers Can Do to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents
The majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by other drivers who simply failed to notice the motorcyclist on the road. They may inadvertently turn left into an oncoming motorcyclist or rear-end a motorcyclist at a red light. When other vehicles collide with a motorcycle on the road, the motorcyclist sustains the majority of the injuries. Even accidents that occur at low speeds can be enough to cause serious and life-threatening injuries.
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is an attempt to remind other drivers to look out for motorcyclists on the road. Sharing the road safely is an important part of reducing horrific motorcycle accidents.
What Motorcyclists Can Do to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents
If you are a motorcyclist, here are a few ways you can reduce the risk of being involved in a serious motorcycle accident.
- Wear a Helmet – Even if you live in a state that does not require motorcyclists to wear a helmet while riding, safety experts recommend that all riders wear a helmet. Helmets are found to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries and they saved an estimated 1,772 lives in 2015 alone. Full coverage DOT-approved helmets offer the most protection.
- Wear Bright Clothing – Increasing your visibility starts with what you are wearing. Wear bright and reflective clothing at all times. While black may look cool, it is not easy to recognize on the road, especially at night or in inclement weather. Bright Kevlar jumpsuits and jackets can give you additional protection while also helping other motorists see you on the road.
- Never Drink and Ride – Buzzed driving is drunk driving. As such, never operate a motorcycle while you have been drinking. In 2014 alone, nearly one-third of all fatal motorcycle accidents involved an alcohol-impaired rider. Instead of riding drunk, designate a sober driver or call a ride-share service.
- Take a Safety Class – Even if you’re not a new rider, all motorcyclists can benefit from taking a motorcycle safety class. There are numerous safety courses offered throughout Texas for varying levels of experience, including brand new riders and those who have years of experience. These classes can help you avoid dangerous accidents and improve your critical thinking and decision making in emergency situations.
- Choose the Right Bike – Supersport bikes are 4x more deadly than cruisers or standard bikes. No matter what type of bike you choose, however, it is important that it fits you well and that you can control the bike with ease. This will help drastically in an emergency situation or in poor weather.
