Texas continues to lead the nation when it comes to fatal drunk driving accidents. And a shocking 40% of all traffic fatalities are attributed to intoxicated drivers. Even though it is illegal to drive with a BAC of 0.08 or higher in Texas, thousands of drivers in the Lone Star State drive drunk every year. In 2015 alone, drunk drivers were responsible for 25,479 car accidents and over 15,000 injuries. On average, someone is injured in a drunk driving crash every 20 minutes in Texas.
Where are these accidents occuring? While DUI car accidents occur in nearly every major city in Texas, some places are statistically more deadly than others. Where are you most likely to get into a fatal DUI accident in the Lone Star State?
A new study by ValuePenguin used the DUI crash data from the Texas Department of Transportation over the last three years to rank cities in Texas according to their size. Larger cities statistically have higher fatal DUI accidents. Of all the large Texas cities with at least 50,000 residents, some were considerably more dangerous than others.
Mid-size cities in Texas had statistically fewer drunk driving related deaths. However, four of the major midsize cities had more DUI fatalities per capita than any other large city in Texas. In fact, the suburbs of Houston contained some of the most dangerous medium-size cities in the state.
On average, smaller cities in Texas were significantly safer than medium or large cities. Here only 2.05 DUI deaths occur per 100,000 residents. Even better, there were no DUI fatalities in 51 of the 95 small cities.
